Umbra Lab is a United States space-technology company that designs, builds, and operates satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Through the Umbra brand, it sells radar imagery, offers custom mission services, and supplies spacecraft hardware.[1] SAR is an active sensing system, allowing collection independently of sunlight and through many cloud conditions[5].

What It Does

Umbra operates the collection infrastructure as well as selling the resulting data. Customers can request radar observations of areas of interest, obtain derived image products, or arrange more integrated access for operational programs.[1] This makes Umbra an upstream imagery producer, unlike marketplaces that aggregate scenes from unrelated satellite owners.

The company also markets Mission Solutions for tailored government and commercial missions and Space Systems hardware described as flight proven.[1] Those activities are adjacent to, but distinct from, the alternative-data use of Umbra imagery to observe changes in physical assets, maritime areas, infrastructure, or terrain.

Data And Methodology

A SAR instrument transmits microwave energy and records the returned signal while the spacecraft moves along its orbit. Processing observations over that path synthesizes a larger antenna aperture. The resulting image represents radar backscatter rather than visible color, so brightness and texture depend on surface geometry, material, moisture, acquisition angle, polarization, and processing choices.

Umbra emphasizes signal-to-noise performance and spacecraft agility across its modes.[2] These are vendor claims. Correct interpretation requires acquisition metadata and radar expertise, particularly when comparing scenes from different geometries or drawing conclusions from apparent changes.

Imaging Modes And Products

Spotlight mode keeps the radar focused on a target while the spacecraft slews, extending the synthetic aperture and supporting advertised 25-centimeter products.[2] Dwell mode uses forward and backward squinting for a long observation during one pass and can support sub-aperture analysis. Scan mode trades some detail for broader off-track collection and is advertised at resolutions between 50 centimeters and 2 meters.[2]

These modes address different analytical needs. Focused imagery can support inspection of a compact site, while broader collection provides regional context or covers multiple targets. Resolution alone does not determine utility: collection timing, incidence angle, noise, scene conditions, licensing, and historical comparability also matter.

Delivery And Access

Umbra links to public pricing, a product guide, and an Open Data program from its remote-sensing pages.[1][2] The open program makes selected SAR data available for public use, while commercial tasking and dedicated-access arrangements provide other routes to collection. Terms and prices can differ by mode, area, priority, licensing, and delivery requirement.

Independent reporting illustrates the dedicated-access model. SpaceNews reported in February 2023 that Maxar signed an agreement for dedicated access to Umbra's radar-imaging constellation.[3] Such an arrangement differs from buying an individual archive scene because it can involve tasking capacity and integration into another provider's workflow.

Buyers And Market Position

SAR imagery can support monitoring where darkness or clouds limit optical satellites, including maritime surveillance, infrastructure observation, disaster assessment, and change detection. SpaceNews reported in April 2025 that Umbra was selected for a United States military public-private agreement to develop maritime-surveillance satellites.[3] It also reported DARPA work on novel radar collection techniques.[3]

SpaceNews reported in December 2024 that the National Reconnaissance Office extended an Umbra contract as the agency expanded plans to integrate commercial SAR.[4] Its search coverage later records another NRO radar-data award in August 2026.[3] These reports independently establish institutional demand, but they do not imply that every Umbra product or collection is available to every commercial buyer.
