The Federal Energy Administration Act of 1974 created the Federal Energy Administration and mandated the National Energy Information System following the 1973 oil market disruption; the Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-91, Section 205) then established EIA on October 1, 1977, as the primary federal authority on energy statistics and analysis, building on those 1974 systems[2].
