(NYSE: SPGI), providing multi-asset-class and real-time data, news, and analytics to institutional investors, investment and commercial banks, insurance companies, investment advisors, wealth managers, corporations, and universities.[1][3].

The division consolidates a series of acquired information businesses, including Capital IQ, SNL Financial, Kensho, 451 Research, and assets from the 2022 IHS Markit merger. What It Does

The division supplies financial data, fundamental company information, estimates, news, and analytics used for investment research, risk management, and corporate development workflows. Within the alternative data industry, S&P Global Market Intelligence is a major distributor and acquirer of datasets — including supply chain data through Panjiva, shipping and trade intelligence through the Journal of Commerce, and AI-derived analytics through Kensho — as well as an aggregator that packages third-party alternative data for institutional clients.[1]

Its customer base spans the institutional finance ecosystem described by the parent company, from asset managers and banks to corporations and universities.[1]

Brands And Products

Subsidiaries and brands associated with the division include Capital IQ (company information aggregation, acquired 2004), EViews (econometric software), the Journal of Commerce (trade and logistics), Panjiva (global trade data), and Global Insight (economic data).[1]

The Kensho Technologies unit, acquired in 2018 for a reported US$550 million, provides machine learning and natural language tools applied to financial content.[2]

History

The division's lineage runs through the McGraw-Hill group of companies, which acquired Standard & Poor's in 1966 and Capital IQ in 2004. The parent was renamed McGraw Hill Financial in 2013 and S&P Global Inc. in April 2016.[2]

Key acquisitions shaping the division include SNL Financial in 2015 for a reported US$2.23 billion, Kensho in 2018, 451 Research in 2019, the US$44 billion IHS Markit merger completed in 2022, Visible Alpha in 2024, and private-markets data firm With Intelligence in a reported US$1.8 billion deal announced in October 2025.[2]

S&P Global is headquartered at 55 Water Street in New York City, having moved from 1221 Avenue of the Americas in 2015.[2]

Landscape

S&P Global Market Intelligence competes with other large financial data and analytics providers such as Bloomberg, FactSet, LSEG, and Moody's. Its scale, historical archives, and acquisition pipeline make it one of the dominant consolidators in the alternative data distribution chain, alongside rivals' data marketplaces.
