Moody’s Data Alliance

From AltData.wiki, The Alternative Data Encyclopedia

Moody's Data Alliance is a data consortium operated by Moody's Analytics, described as a collaborative effort of more than 100 leading financial institutions to create one of the world's largest collections of private credit risk data. Members contribute loan data and receive anonymized credit risk benchmarking in return.[1][2]

The portal tracks commercial and industrial loans to private companies, and the alliance grew out of Moody's earlier Credit Research Database (CRD) consortium, launching under the Data Alliance name with a dedicated portal in March 2018.[2][3][5]

What It Does

Member institutions securely upload loan data through the Data Alliance Portal. Moody's Analytics aggregates, anonymizes, and analyzes the contributed data to create industry benchmarking datasets and analytical tools that members use to compare portfolio risk and lending practices against peers.[2][5]

The resulting data provides insight into normally opaque private credit markets, allowing members to augment internal datasets, identify gaps in data quality, and benchmark portfolio risk for actionable insights on private credit exposure.[1][4]

Data and Methodology

The consortium model pools loan-level data across contributing banks, which Moody's Analytics standardizes and anonymizes. From this base, Moody's derives data products used for accounting standards, stress-testing, internal and regulatory credit models, and loan origination models, alongside visualization and benchmarking tools.[4][5]

Products

Coverage spans multiple asset classes including commercial and industrial (C&I) loans, commercial real estate (CRE), project and industrial finance, and asset finance. In an expansion announced by Moody's Analytics, members became able to upload data for all accepted asset classes and regions through the portal.[3][5]

Buyers and Use Cases

Participants are financial institutions — lenders that contribute their own portfolios in exchange for benchmarking insights. Use cases include private credit market analysis, portfolio risk comparison, model development, and regulatory and accounting applications.[1][4]

History

The alliance was previously known as the Credit Research Database (CRD) consortium. Moody's Analytics launched the Data Alliance Portal in March 2018 to make contribution and benchmarking more convenient and secure. Industry directory AlternativeData.org dates the data portal's founding to 2018. Risk.net named Moody's Analytics Credit Data Provider of the Year, citing the Data Alliance's insight into private markets.[2][3][4][5]
