ISS ESG
From AltData.wiki, The Alternative Data Encyclopedia
ISS ESG is the sustainability research, ratings, and data offering of ISS STOXX. It supplies institutional investors with issuer-level environmental, social, and governance information, controversy screening, climate and nature analytics, regulatory datasets, and portfolio reporting tools.[1]
The business forms part of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), an American proxy-advisory and investment-services firm founded in 1985. ISS expanded its sustainability capabilities through acquisitions that included Ethix SRI Advisors in 2015, Climate Neutral Investments in 2017, and the German ESG-rating company oekom research in 2018.[2]
What It Does
ISS ESG organizes its offering into raw data, screening and controversies, ratings and rankings, climate and nature, regulatory solutions, and engagement and bespoke services. These products are intended to support responsible-investment analysis, issuer screening, shareholder engagement, disclosure work, and assessment of sustainability risks across asset classes.[1]
Data and Methodology
The provider describes its datasets as proprietary, timely, reviewed by specialist analysts, and labelled with source information. Its published coverage figures, dated 31 December 2025, include 8,200 companies for corporate ratings, 830 sovereign issuers, 45,000 funds, and 37,500 issuers in climate solutions. Coverage varies by product and should therefore not be treated as a single universal issuer universe.[1]
Climate and nature analytics draw on more than 1,000 indicators, including emissions, transition risk, physical risk, and net-zero measures. ISS STOXX also makes rating methodologies publicly available, allowing users to inspect the stated analytical framework rather than relying only on output scores.[1]
Products and Delivery
DataDesk is the proprietary screening and analytics interface. ISS STOXX reports that it contains 13,500 factors across 130,000 issuers and provides issuer- and portfolio-level analysis as well as daily alerts. The broader service can also provide raw datapoints without a scoring overlay, specialized regulatory datasets, custom indices, voting-related support, and portfolio reports.[1]
Corporate Context
ISS was owned by MSCI until 2014 and later by Vestar Capital Partners and Genstar Capital. Deutsche Borse announced the acquisition of a majority interest in ISS in 2020.[2] The current ISS STOXX website states that stewardship solutions encompassing governance and sustainability are provided by Institutional Shareholder Services Inc., an investment adviser registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, and are offered to institutional rather than retail clients.[1]
ISS ESG should consequently be understood as a product and research business within a larger capital-markets group, not as a stand-alone public company. Publicly available material verifies broad product families and stated coverage, but it does not disclose standardized public pricing; prospective users must contact the provider for commercial terms.[1]
