Advan Research

From AltData.wiki, The Alternative Data Encyclopedia

Advan Research is an alternative-data provider that combines anonymized mobile-device location observations with credit- and debit-card transactions to estimate visits, sales, and changes in the performance of brands and physical properties.[1] It supplies both structured datasets and browser-based analytical products for financial, commercial-real-estate, corporate, and public-sector applications.

Advan publishes substantial coverage figures, including more than nine million points of interest, 150 million buildings, 10,000 brands, and ten trillion location observations.[1] These are vendor-reported measures rather than independently audited statistics, and the homepage reviewed displayed inconsistent card-transaction totals in different portions of the same page.

What It Does

The location-data side of Advan's service associates mobile-device signals with geofenced venues to produce counts and patterns of visits. The transaction side uses card activity to create consumer-spending indicators. Combining the two can distinguish a change in how many people visit a place from a change in estimated expenditure, although neither signal is equivalent to a venue's audited sales or complete customer population.[1]

The company's FIT product is presented as a foot-traffic intelligence platform available through both an interface and a dataset.[2] Related products cover property-level intelligence, migration and demographic trends, customizable traffic-plus-spend analysis, consumer-spending signals, and a dataset branded Patterns+.

Data And Methodology

Advan says its geolocation inputs come from opted-in devices through applications and use GPS, Wi-Fi, and beacon signals rather than advertising exchanges. It reports more than 100 daily observations from panels of 45 million United States devices and 65 million devices globally, and says it uses more than ten million hand-drawn geofences.[1] All of those quantities and sourcing descriptions are company claims.

A location panel observes participating devices, not every visitor. Results can be affected by application composition, permission rates, device replacement, signal density, geofence design, and the provider's rules for converting pings into visits. Card panels have separate coverage and weighting limitations. Users should evaluate panel stability, backfill policy, visit thresholds, transaction normalization, and confidence intervals before interpreting changes over time.

Products

FIT combines a user interface with foot-traffic data, while REI combines traffic and spending in a customizable platform. REVEAL is positioned around property-level location intelligence, and REP around migration and demographic trends. Patterns+ is offered as a high-fidelity foot-traffic dataset.[1]

SpendView is the named consumer-spending product and is offered as both an interface and a dataset.[3] Public product descriptions identify intended functions but do not disclose enough detail to reproduce the provider's estimates or establish the representativeness of its card panel.

Delivery And Pricing

Advan offers raw structured delivery through FTP, Amazon S3, Google Cloud, and other cloud providers, as well as visual dashboards for on-demand analysis.[1] The website does not publish standard prices and instead directs potential customers to book a demonstration. Dataset cadence, history, geographic scope, fields, and licensing therefore need to be confirmed for each product.

The distinction between raw delivery and an analytical interface matters: direct files allow buyers to build proprietary models and monitor revisions, whereas dashboards provide prepared views but may limit access to row-level records or methodology.

Buyers And Use Cases

Advan groups its customers into finance, commercial real estate, corporate and supply-chain, and civic or public-sector segments.[1] Applications include screening properties, measuring trade areas, following brand visits, estimating spending trends, studying migration, supporting economic development, and incorporating observed activity into investment research.

The company displays customer logos and anonymous investment-manager testimonials, but those materials are first-party marketing and do not independently substantiate contract status or claimed investment performance.[1] An independent Crunchbase organization page exists for Advan Research, although it did not expose usable profile content during this review; it therefore supplies no basis here for claims about funding, founders, or company history.[4]

Privacy And Evaluation

Advan characterizes its mobile data as anonymized and sourced from opted-in devices.[1] Those statements do not by themselves establish how consent is presented, how identifiers are transformed, what minimum aggregation is applied, or whether downstream re-identification controls exist. Buyers should review the current privacy policy, data provenance, contractual restrictions, deletion handling, and applicable state or national privacy requirements.

For due diligence, comparisons against ground truth should be conducted by geography, venue type, and time period. Particular attention is warranted when a dataset is used to infer behavior of small groups or to compare periods in which the underlying panel composition changed.
