Where free datasets end and paid feeds begin — and how to use open data to de-risk a commercial license.
The free layer is real
Public records (SEC EDGAR, patents, clinical trials), official statistics and open hubs like Hugging Face and Kaggle host genuinely useful alt-data. Open data is ideal for prototyping a hypothesis and for building the plumbing before committing budget.
What you pay for
Commercial feeds add coverage, history, entity resolution, point-in-time guarantees, refresh and support. A common path: validate the signal on open data, then license a commercial feed for production, using the open version as a cross-check.
